The African Academy of Sciences (AAS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Marincola, a prominent science advocate and publisher, as its Senior Advisor for Communications and Advocacy, effective 3 January 2017.

Marincola served as the Chief Executive Officer of the US-based PLOS (Public Library of Science) for over three years prior to joining the AAS. She will be leading the Academy’s efforts to promote quality scientific communication within the scientific community, which covers advocacy and leading workshops on scientific writing and publishing. Her duties will also involve fundraising for a project to develop a journal and the AAS’s activities for research and training.

“Elizabeth’s vast experience, energy and leadership will help us to transform the Academy’s research communication ensuring that the researchers we support produce and share quality research that will inform and influence policy,” said Prof Berhanu Abegaz, the AAS Executive Director.

Marincola served as the President/CEO of the Society for Science & the Public, a non-profit organisation that publishes Science News, from 2005-2013 and as the Executive Director of the American Society for Cell Biology from 1991-2005.

She will introduce a lecture series in 2017 that will invite prominent scientists including Nobel laureates to speak at key AAS events. The AAS will host the first Nobel laureate speaker at the 2017 Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science (DELTAS) Africa Annual meeting, which will be held in Ghana in June.

“I am delighted to be joining the AAS especially at this critical moment of its growth and to contribute to its renewed direction of promoting scientific writing and publishing,” said Marincola.Read more ...
